Over the Counter Drugs
The IRS has increased the number of health care items eligible to be bought by flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs). Items fall into a number of categories including: pain killers, antacids, antihistamines, and cold remedies.
The rulings also allow the purchase of medical instruments, for example, a thermometer, a wheelchair or a bed for special medical needs.
The IRS cautions, however, that items claimed must be for medical purposes. You cannot include items such as toiletries, cosmetic face creams, vitamins, health supplements or dietary supplements.
